Digital media is widely lauded as breakthrough technology which allows instantaneous global communication. This form of media replaces the former medium of broadcast communication, like television and radio. And that media replaced the print medium. Each different medium of communication affects the way that we view the world, and the way that we organize collectively, as Marshall Mcluhan emphasized.
The digital media is reliant upon the substrate of metallic computers which allow for the internet, the transmission of global synchronous knowledge and communication. It is widely acknowledge that there is an exponential acceleration tendency of metallic computers, following Moore’s law. Computer gets smaller and smaller and have faster and faster processing speeds.
But what if metallic computers accelerate so fast that we outgrow the need for them? What if our mutual symbiosis with computers is merely a phase of evolution to be succeeded by post-digital media?
The theory here is that our symbiosis with digital media facilitates an evolutionary, epigenetic cascade into a higher biosocial organism, and that we no longer rely on digital media to coordinate human activity. In other words, we get bombarded with so much information from digital media that it causes an epigenetic cascade and allows us to realize a greater state of consciousness in which we are no longer dependent on digital media, but can process these infinite states of information without digital media.
I will try to sketch out the trajectory of this possibility. The post-digital technology media of communication operates completely on organic thought and language. This possibility could not be realized without going through a phase of digital media evolution.
Through being forced to process infinite information on digital media, we quickly realize that all of this information is merely homogeneous. There is no differentiation because there is no time. The succession and apparent difference is merely an illusion. And this leads to the consideration that there is a single theme that connects birth to death. This theme grounds all memory. This theme is the context and frame of all interpretation. It is against this single memory-theme that we contextualize all information.
So what we thought was the homogeneity of all information and the absence of time, was actually a single memory, a singular theme that links birth directly to death. And thus all of life is seen as a single moment in time. And once we life as a single moment in time, this is a massive compression of information. This makes us interpret all information in a much different context.
Essentially, the meaning-content or the underlying significance of all information is greatly amplified. The whole moment of existence is different level of thematic significance, as opposed to simply viewing life as a succession of discrete moments. Thus we interpret all aspects as vivid, lucid, hyper-integrated meaning-structures that are compatible at a higher level of significance.
Everything seems to be inter-compatible and harmonic in its significance layer. Everything seems to be evaluated at the proper level of significance, because it is all contextualized by this single, underlying theme which is ontologically integrated in the structure of existence.
And thus, once this underlying theme linking birth to death is realized by more than one person, it becomes a kind of social habit. It propagates through the field of social communication. It is a kind of underlying theme that is more complex than can be articulated, but at the same time can be compressed or reflected in a finite series of categories. And it is at the layer of this underlying qualitative theme, that people seem to be connected at the communication level.
Thus when this underlying theme becomes a self organizing collective intelligence, then it becomes a kind of underlying medium of communication. It is a social context of all speech which magnifies the underlying significance to make it more lucidly interdependent and interwoven in the social field of language. Thus natural language becomes a field of interwoven mathematical structures that are compressing the field of the qualitative theme. All of the timeline themes are disparate (different subjectivities), but they are interwoven in the field of social categories. The social categories compress the theme into a series of discrete units which are interdependent at the layer of implicit meaning.
